Can Canada reach its climate goals?

As Canada’s Minister of Finance (2015-2020), Mr. Morneau played a key role in shaping progressive, sustainable, and gender-responsive economic policies, including Canada’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Between 1990 and 2015, Mr. Morneau led the multinational human resources firm Morneau Shepell. Under his leadership, the firm grew to over 4,000 employees, becoming the largest human resources services provider in Canada. Mr. Morneau speaks English and French, and holds a BA from Western University, M.Sc.(Econ) from LSE, and an MBA from INSEAD.

As Chief Sustainability Officer, Ms. Hall Findlay oversees Suncor’s sustainability strategy, public policy and government relations efforts; internal and external communications; and she is responsible for the continued deepening of the company’s Indigenous, stakeholder, and community relations.

Ms. Hall Findlay was named a Canadian Climate Champion in 2021 by the British High Commission and the Canada Climate Law Initiative; she was named as one of Canada’s Clean50 for 2022; she was named by the Energy Council as a top global female oil and gas executive and one of the top 275 women influencers.

Prior to joining Suncor, Ms. Hall Findlay was the President and CEO of the Canada West Foundation. She has over 30 years of experience as a corporate lawyer, international trade expert, senior executive and successful entrepreneur.

As a twice-elected Member of Parliament, she served in the Official Opposition shadow cabinet for International Trade; Finance; Transport, Infrastructure and Communities; and Public Works and Government Services. She is currently a member of the Minister of International Trade’s Trade Expert Advisory Council.

Ms. Hall Findlay has a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the University of Toronto and an LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School. She also holds the Institute of Corporate Directors ICD.D designation.

A member of the executive team since 2009, Kate played an instrumental role in Capital Power’s restructuring and the initial public offering that led to the company’s creation.

Kate leads Capital Power’s strategic and sustainability planning and reporting, market forecasting and analytics, regulatory, government relations, internal audit, ethics and compliance, stakeholder engagement, community investment and communications functions. Prior to her current role, Kate has most recently served as Chief Legal and Sustainability Officer at Capital Power, and has been responsible for legal matters affecting all of Capital Power’s activities since its inception in 2009.

Matthew Mendelsohn is a Professor and co-founder of First Policy Response at Ryerson University and a Senior Advisor to Boston Consulting Group’s Global Public Sector Practice. From 2016 to 2020, he served as Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, leading the Prime Minister’s Results & Delivery Unit and the Government of Canada’s Impact & Innovation Unit.

Prior to his role with the Cabinet, Mendelsohn was the founding Director of the Mowat Centre, a public policy think tank in the School of Public Policy & Governance at the University of Toronto. His former credentials include: Deputy Minister with the Ontario government, chief architect of the 2015 Liberal election platform and member of Prime Minister Trudeau’s transition team.

Mendelsohn received his B.A. from McGill University and Ph.D. from l’Université de Montréal and was a tenured faculty member in the Department of Political Studies at Queen’s University.

Michael Bernstein is the executive director of Clean Prosperity, a Canadian non-profit that works toward market-based solutions to the climate crisis. He serves on the C.D. Howe Institute’s Energy Policy Council, as a member of the Public Policy Forum’s Energy Future Forum, and as a MaRS Cleantech Volunteer Advisor.
